Fan Girl

wellreadI received an email from my library that the book I placed on hold was ready for pickup, so I stopped by the Glenview Public Library on my way home from work. I went inside rather than using the pickup window because I had also received a notice that I had an award ready for pick up at the Reference desk for my participation in the summer reading program. So in I went. Picked up the book and headed to the Reference desk.

I said to the man at the desk that I was here for the summer reading program. He gave me a water bottle and asked for my library card. That voice. That very familiar voice. “Ethan?” He looked at me. “I recognize you from the podcast.” Huge grin on my face. Then huge grin on his face.

I could tell he was surprised. You see the downloads, he said, but you wonder if people are really listening. Of course, I told him (maybe gushed) how much I enjoyed the podcast. He asked if I ever read any of their recommendations. That was when I smiled even bigger and showed him that the book I just picked up was The Thing with Feathers : The Surprising Lives of Birds and What They Reveal about Being Human by Noah K. Strycker, which was Anne’s choice in the Science-themed podcast in June.

Brilliant. Ethan was impressed. And then I told him that I gave my son the book, The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery for Chanukah. It was Anne’s pick in October for the Animal life-themed podcast. He said I made his day. But of course, he made mine.

When I got home I was so excited and summoned husband and kids and relayed the celebrity sighting in great detail. To which kids said I was a total fan girl and so embarrassing. The embarrassing part, I get a lot. Fan girl? I’ll take that as a compliment. What I am thinking is, I need to meet Anne.
